Conservatory Planning permission
Permission Requirements for Planning a Conservatory.
In terms of planning control and building regulations for any Conservatory in the UK, the situation is far simpler than that for a typical “traditional “home extension, because any of the controls are relaxed or removed if the conservatory is dimensions are within certain limits. Here are a few of the basics:
Planning may not be required if you;
- Use less than 50% of the land around the “original “property.
- Don’t put it on the front of the house.
- Don’t make it higher than the highest part of your existing house.
- Have a detached property and don’t extend more than 4 metres.
- Have a semi-detached or attached property and don’t extend by more than 3 metres.
- Keep the conservatory single story and under 4 metres in height.
- Fit the conservatory on the side of the house and keep it single story, cover less than 50% of the length of the side of the original building and under 4 metres in height.

Building regulations in the UK will certainly apply if you fit heating or electrics, and they should be installed by a certified tradesman. Make sure the installer knows their stuff, because there are some sneaky little rules – like any heating system installed must have its own independent “on /off” switch.
